According to some forums, the sensor size is more important than the resolution. The problem is, manufacturers packed more pixels than the image sensor can handle, making the pictures noisier even at moderate ISO's. I have seen those in cheap and tiny point-and-shoots claiming to have 12 mp or higher megapixels.
The secret in digital photography is in the lens and sensor size/ noise handling and not in megapixel. In my D90, I seldom go to 12 mp unless I shoot for tarpaulin.
